Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad, as pointed as Mulk and Article 15 but markedly less dramatic, cuts close to the bone. It is likely to reverberate beyond the darkened movie halls where it plays. It has the potential to force audiences to pause and think and, hopefully, act. As you watch Thappad, you sense how efficacious cinema can be when it is pressed into the service of conversations that matter.
Thappad tells the story of Amrita Sabherwal (Taapsee Pannu), a Delhi homemaker. She happily puts her own aspirations on hold to serve the needs of her workaholic husband Vikram (Pavail Gulati) and diabetic mother-in-law (Tanvi Azmi). One fine evening, she is repaid with a slap. She walks out of the marriage
Amrita’s rebellion is accidental but essential. Her ‘well-wishers’, including her brother (Ankur Rathee), counsel patience and caution. She takes a few days to formulate an emotional response to the unexpected act of domestic violence before she turns to a lawyer for help. Once her urge to assert her dignity is kindled, her resolve is unwavering.
The slap is the principal point of departure in Thappad, an undemonstrative yet resounding drama that poses pertinent questions about gender imbalances in a man-woman relationship without claiming to be in the know of all the answers. It is the heroine’s reaction to the humiliation she is subjected to and its emotional and social repercussions that the film is more interested in.
Pavail Gulati has the tough job of being the trigger of the film’s principal conflict point while guarding against reducing himself to an object of contempt. Aided by the screenplay, the actor balances the qualities of a genial man with that of an individual who turns into a smug husband at the slightest provocation. The character arc wrong-foots Thappad into granting him a somewhat unconvincing escape route in the climactic moments – one of the rare false notes in Thappad.

अच्छा सिनेमा क्या होता है अच्छा सिनेमा वो होता है जो कहीं ना कहीं दर्शकों के दिलों दिमाग पर असर डालता है। प्रोजेक्ट के दौड़ में मशगूल बॉलीवुड में सिनेमा की कमी सभी देख रहे हैं मगर गाहे-बगाहे कुछ ऐसी फिल्में आ जाती है इसे देखकर आप कह उठते हैं वाह क्या सिनेमा है।
अनुभव सिन्हा अपने कायाकल्प के बाद जिस तरह का सिनेमा बना रहे हैं वह वाकई तारीफे काबिल है! उनकी फिल्म ‘थप्पड़’ का शुमार अच्छे सिनेमा में जरूर होगा। मात्र एक विचार है शादीशुदा जिंदगी में कोई पति अपनी पत्नी को किसी भी कारण से किसी भी परिस्थिति में ‘थप्पड़’ मारने का हक नहीं रखता।
अमूमन भारतीय समाज में पति अगर अपनी पत्नी को मार दे तो ना सिर्फ उसके सास-ससुर बल्कि लड़की के मां-बाप भी यह कहते नजर आते हैं कि पति पत्नी में थोड़ा बहुत लड़ाई झगड़ा तो चलता रहता है। और ‘थप्पड़’ यह कहती है कि कभी भी थप्पड़ मारना सही नहीं है, इसका अधिकार पति को नहीं है। थप्पड़ मारना न सिर्फ नैतिक रूप से गलत है बल्कि कानून भी गलत है।
इस विचार को निर्देशक अनुभव सिन्हा और उनकी सह लेखिका मृण्मई लागू ने बहुत ही खूबसूरती के साथ न सिर्फ कहानी में गढ़ा, बल्कि पटकथा और संवादों के माध्यम से दर्शकों को यह समझाने का सफलतम प्रयास किया कि आखिर गलत कहां है। फिल्म देखने के बाद सारे मर्दों को इस बात का एहसास होगा, साथ ही शर्मिंदगी भी… जाने अनजाने कैसे सदियों पुराना पुरुष जो हमारे भीतर बसा हुआ है गलतियां करता है और उन गलतियों का एहसास तक हम लोग नहीं कर पाते।
किरदार में कई सारी परतें थीं वह एक ऐसे पति का का किरदार निभा रहे हैं जो पॉजिटिव होते हुए भी गलत है और वह कहां गलत है इस बात का एहसास उसे नहीं है। इसे पर्दे पर उतारना वाकई मुश्किल काम था जो पावेल ने पूरी कुशलता से किया है। इसके अलावा दिया मिर्जा की मौजूदगी दृश्य को और मजबूत बना देती है। कुमुद मिश्रा रत्ना पाठक शाह जैसे कलाकार फिल्म को नई ऊंचाइयां देते हैं। उल्लेखनीय परफॉर्मन्स रहा काम वाली बनी गीतिका विद्या का। कुल मिलाकर ‘थप्पड़’ आज के दौर की एक महत्वपूर्ण फ़िल्म है जिसे देखना वाकई आपको एक अलग अनुभव देगा।
