SOTY 2 is centred around the very very middle class Rohan Sachdev (Shroff), star athlete of the low-brow Pishorilal Chamandas College, and his rivalry with the very very wealthy Manav Singh Randhawa (Aditya Seal) of the snooty Saint Teresa College not far away. When Rohan beats Manav unexpectedly in a track event, the stage is set for a clash in their personal and student lives culminating in the annual Dignity Cup tournament between the colleges of Dehradun and Mussoorie that will also decide the winner of the Student of the Year trophy.
That film was directed by Karan Johar, and whatever its failings may have been – the foremost being that it sinfully under-utilised Bhatt’s acting talent and reduced her to a Barbie – at least it had her cuteness, Malhotra’s hotness, Dhawan’s fledgling acting skills, the trio’s undeniable charisma and a superficial fun factor going for it. The sequel, produced by Johar and directed by Punit Malhotra (I Hate Love Storys), pretends to be about two girls and a boy but it doesn’t really care about the girls, and the boy, well, he is played by Shroff who cannot act to save his life or a film.
To analyse SOTY 2 primarily on the basis of its gender apathy would be to take it too seriously though. What it ought to be judged on are its blandness, triteness and poor casting. Cliché is piled on cliché in this unoriginal screenplay.
Tara Sutaria who plays Rohan’s girlfriend Mridula has a lukewarm personality, but Ananya Panday, who is cast as mean girl Shreya, has an X factor that pushes its way past the layers of gloss in SOTY 2. Both characters are initially positioned as significant but are in fact marginal to the proceedings. The graceful and striking Ms Panday (actor Chunky Panday’s daughter) deserves more.
Aditya Seal acts better than Shroff but has a somewhat dull screen presence, which made me wonder why his role was not given instead to TV actor Abhishek Bajaj making his film debut here as Rohan’s kabadditeammate. In a tiny part, Bajaj makes a far greater impression than Seal does as the second lead.
This lack of passion is mirrored by Hollywood superstar Will Smith who dances unenthusiastically for a few seconds on stage in this film in what must rank as the worst conceptualised, worst shot superstar guest appearance in Bollywood in recent memory. Smith’s scene competes with Sutaria’s insipidity, Shroff’s acting and numerous plot clichés to be the answer to the question: what’s the worst part of Student of the Year 2.

टाइगर श्रॉफ, अनन्या पांडे, तारा सुतारिया की फिल्म ‘स्टूडेंट ऑफ द ईयर 2’ आज रिलीज हो गई है। ‘कलंक’ के बुरी तरह पिटने के बाद करण को इस फिल्म से काफी उम्मीदे हैं। वहीं अन्नया और तारा इस फिल्म से बॉलीवुड में कदम रखने जा रही हैं। फिल्म को लेकर फैंस की अलग-अलग प्रतिक्रियाएं सामने आ रही हैं।
कुछ लोगों के फिल्म बहुत पंसद आई है। तो कुछ इसे हॉलीवुड फिल्म ‘कराटे किड पार्ट 3’ बता रहे हैं। कुछ यूजर्स तो ऐसे भी हैं जिन्हें फिल्म का कॉन्सेप्ट ही सही नहीं लग रहा है। उनका कहना है कि फिल्म में स्कूल के बच्चों के शॉर्ट ड्रेस पहने, रोमांस करते, डिस्को डांस करते दिखाया है। इससे बच्चों के दिमाद पर बुरा असर पड़ेगा। क्योंकि स्कूल का माहौल ऐसा बिल्कुल नहीं होता है। यानी कुल मिलाकर देखा जाए तो फिल्म का अबतक मिलाजुला रिस्पॉन्स सामने आ रहा है।
‘स्टूडेंट ऑफ द ईयर 2’ का निर्देशन करण जौहर ने किया है। ये फिल्म 2012 में आई फिल्म ‘स्टूडेंट ऑफ द ईयर’ का सीक्वल है। उस फिल्म से भी आलिया भट्ट, वरुण धवन और सिद्धार्थ मल्होत्रा ने डेब्यू किया था। ‘स्टूडेंट ऑफ द ईयर’ पर्दे पर हिट रही थी।
फिल्म की कहानी में टाइगर श्रॉफ देहरादून के सेंट टेरेसा कॉलेज में स्पोर्ट्स कोटा से एडमिशन लेते हैं। टाइगर का सामना कॉलेज के पोस्टर बॉय मानव मेहरा (आदित्य सील) से होता है। मानव मेहरा की बहन श्रेया का किरदार अनन्या पांडे ने अदा किया है। वहीं तारा सुतारिया भी कॉलेज की एक स्टूडेंट्स में से एक हैं। एक दिन कॉलेज में स्टूडेंट ऑफ द ईयर के खिताब का कॉम्पिटिशन होता है। टागइर और मानव मेहरा इस खिताब को जीतने के लिए पूरी कोशिश करते हैं। वहीं टाइगर-तारा और अनन्या के बीच लव ट्रायएंगल बन जाता है। फिल्म में दो लड़कियों के बीच एक लड़के की कहानी को बयां किया गया है। फिल्म में जवानी के जोश और जीत के जुनून का भी तड़का है। कहानी में एक दिलचस्प ट्विस्ट भी आता है, जिसके बाद कहानी और ज्यादा रोमांचक हो जाती है। ये देखने के लिए आपको सिनेमाघरों का रुख करना पड़ेगा।
फिल्म के गाने ‘द जवानी सॉन्ग’, ‘फकीरा’, ‘मुंबई दिल्ली दी कुड़ियां’ और ‘जट लुधियाणे दा’ फैन्स को खूब पसंद आए। फिल्म के गाने और बेहतरीन सिनेमेटोग्राफी को देखते हुए भी ऐसा माना जा रहा है कि लोग फिल्म को देखने के लिए सिनेमाघरों का रुख करेंगे। वहीं ट्रेड पंडितों ने ऐसा अनुमान लगाया है कि फिल्म यूथ के बीच हिट साबित होगी।
