Priyanka Chopra has been signed by ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali to play the lady don for his next project called Heera Mandi. The film is reportedly based on the life of Gangubai Kothewali, one of the most dreaded pimps of Kamathipura, Mumbai’s red light area. The project will have Priyanka playing the lead role of the film. The actress has been in talks with the filmmaker for a long time and it was earlier said that she has opted out of a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film because of date issues.
“Sanjay Bhansali has a lot of love and regard for Priyanka Chopra, however, no such film has been discussed,” the director’s spokesperson had earlier said, refuting reports of her quitting the gangster drama. Now if Priyanka has really singed up for the project, the director-actor duo will reunite after their blockbuster film Bajirao Mastani.
Talking about Gangubai Kothewali, the film circles the life of Gangubai who had stood up for the rights of prostitutes and had pushed several women into the business to save them from their miserable situations. Gangubai was also believed to have a lot of connections with powerful people. Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Mafia Queen of Mumbai’ has a detailed description of the lady don.
Infact, she was popularly known as the ‘Madam of Kamathipura’ back in the day, for running several brothels and providing ‘protection’ to young girls who were forced into the sex trade. PC has never shied away from playing gritty, real characters on screens and so it would be a revelation to see her in the role of a Mafia Queen. It has been a long time since we have enjoyed her performance on the big screen in a realistic drama.
The buzz has further revealed that the lauded director is looking to cast a few of Bollywood’s most prominent names, Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherjee, Sonam Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan along with Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.
According to a Filmfare report citing sources, the film is undergoing its final stages of writing and will be centered on the lives of prostitutes and the infamous female gangster Gangubai Kothewala who is known to be running numerous brothels in Mumbai as well for shielding women who are put into the profession by coercion.

संजय लीला भंसाली ने इस साल ‘पद्मावत’ जैसी सुपरहिट फिल्म दी थी। फिल्म में दीपिका पादुकोण, रणवीर सिंह और शाहिद कपूर ने जबरदस्त एक्टिंग कर लोगों का दिल जीत लिया था । अब उन्होंने नए प्रोजेक्ट की तैयारी शुरू कर दी है.हाल ही में फिल्म का नाम भी सामने आ गया है ।
अपनी नई फिल्म को लेकर संजय लीला भंसाली की ओर से कोई बयान नहीं आया है । लेकिन खबरों के मुताबिक, भंसाली की अगली फिल्म गंगूबाई कोठेवाली नाम की एक महिला डॉन पर आधारित होगी। इसके लिए भंसाली ने प्रियंका चोपड़ा को अप्रोच किया है ।
प्रियंका चोपड़ा ने अभी तक इस फिल्म को साइन नहीं किया है । वो फिल्म की स्क्रिप्ट पूरी होने का इंतजार कर रही हैं। डेक्कन क्रॉनिकल की खबर के अनुसार, ‘संजय लीला भंसाली ने अपनी इस फिल्म का टाइटल फाइनल कर दिया है। इसका नाम ‘हीरा मंडी’ रखा गया है ।’
फिल्म की स्क्रिप्टिंग का काम आखिरी स्टेज पर है, जैसे ही वो पूरा हो जाएगा इसकी शूटिंग शुरू कर दी जाएगी। बता दें कि गंगूबाई कोठेवाली एक समय पर मुंबई में कई सारे वैश्यालय चलाती थी । आज के समय में ये महिला कमाठीपुरा में रहने वाली महिलाओं के बीच पूजी जाती है। गंगूबाई अपनी साथी महिलाओं का खूब ख्याल रखती थीं जिस कारण आज भी लोग उनकी बहुत इज्जत करते हैं।
भंसाली का यह महत्वाकांक्षी प्रोजेक्ट है और इसकी कहानी वेश्यावृत्ति से संबंधित है।हीरा मंडी ऐसा प्रोजेक्ट है जिसे उन्होंने बीते एक डेढ़ दशक में दो तीन बार शुरू करने की कोशिश की परंतु हर बार बंद करना पड़ा।अब उनके करीबी कह रहे हैं कि भंसाली इसे शुरू करने के करीब हैं और उन्होंने फिल्म के लिए तीनों हीरोइनें फाइनल कर ली हैं। फिल्म की स्क्रिप्ट को भी इन हीरोइनों को ध्यान में रख कर अंतिम रूप दे दिया जा रहा है। वैसे ट्रेड की नजर इस पर है कि महिला केंद्रित इस विषय पर फिल्म बनाते हुए क्या भंसाली दीपिका पादुकोण और प्रियंका चोपड़ा को भी कोई रोल हीरामंडी में देंगे।
हालांकि प्रियंका चोपड़ा को किसी बड़ी बॉलीवुड फिल्म का हिस्सा बने, काफी लंबा समय हो चुका है। इस वजह से इनके बॉलीवुड करियर में हाल्ट सा लग चुका है। कहीं ना कहीं उन्हें अब एक धमाकेदार कमबैक की जरूरत है।
