Despite the standard disclaimer that appears at the start of pretty much every film these days (“any resemblance to persons living or dead is entirely coincidental” etc), Chhapaak – as is evident from its promotions – is based on the true story of acid-attack survivor and activist Laxmi Agarwal. In the film she becomes Malti (played by Deepika Padukone) whose life changes forever one day when acid is thrown on her face. Malti is 19 at the time and Basheer Khan a.k.a. Babbu, a family friend, is 30. His motive: she had ignored his romantic overtures and was clearly involved with a boy in a neighbouring school.
Director Meghna Gulzar’s film, which she has co-written with Atika Chohan, is far from being a conventional high-pitched melodrama. Chhapaak’s narrative style is largely documentary-like, leaving the horror of Malti’s reality to do its work on viewer emotions. Besides, when we are first introduced to the protagonist, it is with her damaged face, and only in the climactic moments of the film do we get to see her for what she once was. Through most of the running time then, it is impossible not to compare the corroded skin on screen with the beauty we know Padukone to be.
The film does have its positives. Such as its unobtrusive background score by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Tubby, and a gentle title track by SEL. Or that amusing, heart-warming conversation between two survivors about the kind of face that they want post-surgery.
The winner among all the episodes in Chhapaak is the one where Malti in a celebratory mood has a face-off with Amol. The writing and acting in this scene are flawless.

फिल्म छपाक की कहानी दिल दहला देने वाली है. ये कहानी है मालती अग्रवाल (दीपिका पादुकोण) की, जिसपर एसिड से अटैक किया गया है. मालती का पूरा चेहरा जल चुका है और उसकी जिंदगी तबाह हो गई है. लोगों का शक उसके बॉयफ्रेंड राजेश (अंकित बिष्ट) पर जाता है, लेकिन मालती का गुनहगार राजेश नहीं बल्कि उसी का जानकार बब्बू उर्फ बशीर खान और उसकी रिश्तेदार परवीन शेख है.
19 साल की मालती की मदद में आगे आती है उसके पिता की मालकिन शिराज और उनकी वकील अर्चना (मधुरजीत सरघी). अर्चना, मालती का केस लड़ती है और उसे न्याय दिलाने के लिए मेहनत करती है. वहीं मालती की मुलाकात होती है अमोल से, जो अपनी पत्रकार की नौकरी छोड़कर एसिड अटैक सर्वाइवर्स के इलाज के लिए NGO चला रहा है. मालती और अमोल साथ काम करते हैं और प्यार में पड़ जाते हैं.
डायरेक्टर मेघना गुलजार किसी भी बड़ी से बड़ी कहानी को आराम और सलीके से जनता के सामने परोसना जानती हैं. छपाक जैसी दर्दनाक कहानी को बहुत खूबसूरती से बड़े पर्दे पर उतारा है. फिल्म का डायरेक्शन बहुत उम्दा है. इसकी सिनेमेटोग्राफी, म्यूजिक, एडिटिंग और प्रोस्थेटिक्स बहुत कमाल है. गुलजार के लिखे लिरिक्स और अरिजीत सिंह की आवाज आपको अंदर तक कचोटती है.
ये फिल्म आपको बहुत सारी चीजें महसूस करवाती है, जिसमें डर सबसे बड़ा है. इसी के साथ ये आपकी आंखें खोलने का काम भी करती है कि कैसे एसिड अटैक जैसा घिनौना अपराध आज भी हो रहा है और कितनी लड़कियों की जिंदगी बर्बाद हो रही है. छपाक को देखने के बाद आप अपनी भावनाओं को नहीं रोक पाएंगे. तो आपको दीपिका पादुकोण की छपाक जरूर देखनी चाहिए!
