फिल्म परमाणु की कहानी की बात की जाये तो ये भारत की उस ऐतिहासिक घटना पर आधारित है जिसके चलते देश परमाणु शक्ति संपन्न देशों की कतार में मजबूती से आ खड़ा हुआ था कहानी भारत के दूसरे परमाणु परीक्षण यानि पोखरण 2 से जुड़ी है भारत ने 1998 में 11 से 13 मई के बीच राजस्थान के पोखरण टेस्ट रेंज में ऑपरेशन शक्ति के नाम से दूसरा परमाणु परीक्षण किया था जिसमें पांच परमाणु बम का टेस्ट एक्सप्लोजन किया गया डॉ एपीजे अब्दुल कलाम पूर्व राष्ट्रपति इस प्रोजेक्ट के हेड थे और तब के प्रधानमंत्री अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी ने परीक्षण के मसौदे पर साइन किया था
